The Ruby Slippers in The Wizard of Oz
The popular movie The Wizard of Oz is based on the work of L. Frank Baum, who wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and a number of other related books. What many people do not know is that in the book series, the famous slippers that Dorothy first gets from the Wicked Witch of the East and that are nearly stolen from her by the Wicked Witch of the West, were not the ruby slippers seen in the movie.
The slippers that Dorothy gets from the Wicked Witch of the East that she clicks together three times were actually made of silver in the book. When the most well-known movie version of the story was being made in the 1930s, the studio wanted to make use of technology available to produce movies in color and decided to change the silver shoes to ruby slippers. The brilliance and sparkle of the red-colored shoes demonstrated the advances in movie technology in a way that silver would not have done.
We can understand the decision to make the silver shoes into ruby slippers. Red is an attention-getting color and rubies are jewels that command attention.
